Portland entered the 1984 draft with young guard Clyde Drexler and a need at center, while league convention placed unusual value on size. Sam Bowie had returned from two seasons lost to leg injuries and completed a strong final college season, making him both a positional answer and a medical risk.
Careers, not transferable trophies
The Trail Blazers selected Bowie second and Chicago selected Michael Jordan third. Jordan’s later achievements make the order famous, but they do not prove Portland would have reproduced Chicago’s roster, coaching, health, or championships; the documented miss is the selection order and divergent careers, not a calculable alternate dynasty.
