A category before a dependable product
Apple publicly described a personal digital assistant before the MessagePad shipped in August 1993. The delay raised expectations, while unreliable handwriting recognition struck at the pen-based product’s most visible promise; later updates improving it could not erase the first impression.
Failure with a technical afterlife
Apple discontinued Newton in 1998, so it never became the pocket-computing platform its launch imagined. Yet the Computer History Museum also traces an important ARM connection through the project, making Newton a reminder that a commercial disappointment can still leave capabilities and relationships that matter later.
